Student Spotlight: Martha Flavin

Martha is a student on our Designer Development Course. We asked her about how LFDS has helped her move into creative work:

“I grew up and went to school near Bath. After completing my A levels I decided to do a little bit of travelling around Malaysia and Indonesia before returning to do an Art Foundation at a local college. After my Art Foundation year, I went on to study BA Fine Art at Central Saint Martins university in London. I was put into the 3D/sculpture pathway at Saint Martins which is where I developed a multidisciplinary, conceptual art practice.
After my degree I decided to embark on a career in spatial design. I quickly realised that a career in spatial design requires some proficiency in computer design software, so I saved up some money and enrolled on a course at London Fields Design school where I have had the privilege of learning various BIM programs such as AutoCAD, Revit, Vectorworks and Rhino.
The course at LFDS is really flexible and adaptable. I was originally learning BIM/CAD for a career in interior design/architecture, but now I am learning Adobe suite and Cinema 4D, so I can start working on product/packaging design and graphic skills used for campaigns and adverts. Over the last couple of years I have received great support from Ben and his wonderful team at LFDS. The advice and feedback I have received has really helped me to boost my confidence, and find direction in my work and ideas.”

Great post — really inspiring to read about Martha’s journey. As someone considering student accommodation in London while studying design, it’s reassuring to know there are courses like LFDS offering flexibility, so you can focus on creativity without stressing about housing.
